Clinical Experience Design

Designing Digital Experiences Clinicians Actually Want to Use

Kari Kennedy and Sergiy Sumnikov discuss why clinician and patient experience go hand in hand, how to distinguish workflow problems from interface problems, and how to measure whether a digital tool actually reduces clinician burden.

This session is for

Key takeaways

Build around the clinician's day

Clinicians already spend long days documenting care. Consolidate logins, reduce jumps between applications, and make the tool simple enough to fit the work they already do.

Present where to focus rather than asking clinicians to interpret another dashboard. Use progressive disclosure and visualizations that match how care teams think about patients and body systems.

Involve frontline users before evaluating vendors and keep them in pilots and testing throughout implementation. Their knowledge of everyday workflows exposes problems that distant teams may miss.

Find the root cause of friction. Map tasks, handoffs, the user journey, and the services behind it before changing an interface; removing one unnecessary step can make the biggest difference.

Compare time on task, clicks, completion, and error rates before and after a change. Pair those numbers with perceived workload, provider satisfaction, and retention.

Understand budget cycles, communicate the reason for change, pilot in small steps, and let champion users share what worked with their peers.

Care teams need time and attention to connect with patients. Better clinician workflows can support patient satisfaction, retention, and more coordinated care.
